The photographic project Tohoku is included in CHROMANTIC: A Tribute to Alex Webb, published by Exhibit Around / dotART cultural association
On March 11, 2011, a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck Japan's Tōhoku coast. In the aftermath, volunteers worked to clear mountains of debris. Personal belongings recovered from the ruins were cleaned and catalogued in the hope that they might one day be returned to their owners. As the debris was removed, the geometries and patterns of residential interiors gradually re-emerged.
These photographs are visual scans of what remained of Ōtsuchi, a small town on the Tōhoku coast, one year after the 2011 tsunami.
Many thanks to Caritas Japan, professor Ikuo Kobayashi and to Exhibit Around / dotART cultural association.
